Day after: It's still tough to swallow

「ダラス・モーニング･ニュース」（新聞）が無料で配布している、「QUICK」というフリーペーパーがあります。発行は週末を除く毎日。レストランとか、ショップなどに置いてあり、私は大体アパートのマネージメントオフィスでゲットします。ローカルからインターナショナルな出来事まで、こんな薄い新聞なのに非常にコンパクトにまとめられていて助かります。CNNを見ていても、アジアのニュースなんてあまり流れません。その点、「QUICK」は阿部さんが就任したときや、北朝鮮の動き、さらに“みのもんた”がテレビ出演最高記録とかでギネスに載りました。という記事までカバー。載せる載せないの線引きがイマイチ分からないのですが、ここではしっかり私のハートを掴んでいます。

さて、先日投稿したROMO選手の出来事。翌日の「QUICK」にこんなコメントがありました。

Slick ball was a factor in Bad shap: The main reason Toniy Romo mishandled a snap on a potential 19-yard game-winning field-goal try was trhe slickness of the football. Normally, kicking balls have the wax rubbed off them so holders and deep snappers can handle them easier. Deep snapper L.p. Ladouceur complained to special teams coach Bruce DeHaven that the ball used for the kick was the worst of the night, and it appeared it was a new ball. "Obviously the reason I dropped it was... it was a slick ball. It doesn't matter. You still have to catch it," Romo said.

野球では、捕手がピッチャーのために新しいボールは何度か手で握ってから渡してあげる、という話は聞いてたけど、フットボールでも新しいボールは滑りやすいものなんですね。知らなかった。
